District Online UX Designer District Online is an initiative by the Government of Assam, in association with Embedded Interaction Labs, to build an online e-governance portal. The project aims to build a seamless connectivity between citizens and administrative authorities.
Context Electronic Governance, is the use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to run or carry on the business of the Government of a Country. It ensures faster communication, transparent processing of grievances, accountability towards citizens and helps save cost of stationary and other related expenditure. My Responsibilities This is an ongoing project in the Embedded Interactions Lab, IIT Guwahati. The team is headed by Keyur Sorathia and comprises of two developers and me as a designer. The client, District Commissioner Office Kamrup, sends feedback and holds weekly meetings. User Personas To avoid “elastic” user needs in head, personas with a set of estimated characteristics were sketched and used for design. Task Flows The portal facilitates many processes which took months till now. Phase I included building it for application of leaves and public grievances. Leave applications are applied by employees and granted by the District Commissioner. There are total seven types of leaves mainly divided into earned and casual. Earlier, all this was done manually through paper leave forms and record books. The aim was to adopt it to the portal for quick addresal of leave requests and a systematic record. Public grievances were earlier reported by citizens using paper forms. The task delegation took time and there are no transparency in the status of the complaint. Wireframing After the user flow was decided, many such low-fidelity wireframes were made by me to start structuring the ideas. One such sketch that was used. Style Guidelines Since the portal will be scaled to the entire state, maintaining a uniformity in design will be very important. A glimpse of the style guide I created for the developers. Visual Design The visual design was done keeping in mind the style guides and the major UX goals we wished to achieve. A few of the screens follow. It was a succeful project, now being used by the Governmnet of Assam.
